A Supreme Court jury has awarded $1.2 million compensation to a Sydney man who was given the strap as a schoolboy.

Paul Martin Hogan was initially awarded almost $3 million for injuries he received when struck with a leather strap at St John's College in Lakemba in Sydney's south-west.

The Court of Appeal overturned that ruling and ordered a new trial to reconsider the size of the payout.

Mr Hogan told the court he suffers medical, educational and work problems after he was struck on the hand eight times in one day.

In a short statement read by his lawyer, Peter Semler QC, Mr Hogan said he is happy with the decision and hopes it is the end of his ordeal.
