FORK UNION - A former Fork Union Military Academy teacher arrested in Mexico last week nearly three years after his conviction for sex crimes involving two teenage cadets likely will be brought back to Virginia by the end of the week, authorities said.

Mexican officials took Gregory Allen Moyer into custody in Mexico City on Friday after students at a school where he was teaching discovered he was a fugitive while conducting an Internet search for a book he published, according to Capt. Beth Skrobanski with the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office.

The students then called the “America’s Most Wanted” tip line, the FBI and the Hook, a local newsweekly, Skrobanski said. The Hook had authored an article on Moyer the students found online.

“America’s Most Wanted” then contacted the Fluvanna County Sheriff’s Office, and Moyer was arrested through combined efforts of the FBI, the U.S. Consulate in Mexico and Mexican authorities, she said.

Skrobanski said her office still needs to obtain a warrant to have Moyer extradited to Fluvanna County from Houston, where he is being held.

“That takes time, unfortunately,” she said. “But we expect to have him by the end of the week.”

The federal unlawful flight charges Moyer was arrested on will be waived, she said, but Moyer faces a charge for failing to appear at a 2001 sentencing hearing as well as his prison sentence of three and a half years. He was convicted in 1997 in Fluvanna County for taking indecent liberties with minors. He spent years filing appeals until the Virginia Supreme Court refused to hear his case.

The former science teacher’s trial exposed lurid details of a “secret society” Moyer established with the two cadets, ages 13 and 15 at the time. The group’s activities included paddling, bondage and buttocks tattooing, and nude pictures of the boys were found pasted in Moyer’s journal.

Moyer disappeared while free on a $50,000 bond posted by the parents of one of his victims. The mother of one of the cadets involved in the semi-militaristic rituals testified that Moyer was a good man.

Moyer told the couple who posted the bond money in May 2001 that he planned to go camping and “gather his thoughts” for a few days before returning to face his prison sentence. Authorities originally thought he was either hiding in Richmond, his last known residence, or camping on Skyline Drive.
